Every once in a while I get the opportunity to recreate a room in someone else’s house. A friend of mine, who just so happens to live in our neighborhood mentioned to me that she had been wanting to redo her bedroom. Cierra has had the same bedroom décor since her family moved into the house when she was 11. Now 19 years old and a college student, it’s safe to say her taste has changed. She knew that I could help! She has helped me with a few painting projects here in my own house and it was time that I returned the favor.
I started by asking her what he favorite color was. “Orange”, she replied. When I walked into her bedroom I realized she wasn’t kidding! Right away I knew your typical orange was off the table, she’s had bright orange walls for 8 years and it was time for change. I decided to pitch a beautiful Coral, Navy and Sea Blue color scheme. I had a vision!
I went to Home Goods and ended finding a perfect throw pillow…well almost perfect. As you can see the pillow had all the colors I was envisioning for Cierra’s color scheme, except for Navy Blue. I went ahead and bought the pillow anyways, it was $16.99, such a reasonable price as a nice focal point of the bed. I knew I really wanted to see Navy in that pillow! I grabbed a $1 craft paint from Hobby Lobby and got to work. I painted on some navy blue accents mimicking the current pattern on the pillow to just add that pop of color it needed. Just like that, it was perfect!
As a college student, she had a small budget for her room. Lucky for us, Cierra had a little bit of furniture and other items I knew we could utilize. I’m a big fan of using what you have when it comes to re-decorating. I knew Yard Sales and spray paint would be our best friend during this project. We came across some amazing finds for this project, including picture frames a large vase and a nightstand.
Her nightstand is one of my favorite yard sale finds to date. I spotted this beat up wooden file cabinet and I thought it could serve our purpose. We were even more delighted when the owner told us it was $4!! SOLD!! I took it home, sanded it and gave it a few coats of navy blue spray paint. I added some gold drawer pulls from Lowes and voila! Isn’t it beautiful?!? After everything was said and done it was a total investment of $16!
Night Stand $4
Spray Paint $4
Drawer Pulls $4 each x 2 = $8
I knew as soon as Cierra mentioned her bedroom that I wanted to make her an upholstered headboard. I’ve been itching to make one and finally I had the opportunity. I followed this tutorial from Treasured Rubbish. This is a two-person job, for sure. My hubby helped me, and his muscles came in handy for the staple gunning. The project ended up taking about 2 hours start to finish. This full sized headboard project ended up costing $50, we went with a higher quality fabric so it will be more durable. This is still about half the cost of buying a headboard like it.
TIP: Lowes and Home Depot will cut any piece of wood to whatever size you need at no charge! So don’t go buying a saw for one project.
We brightened up her existing dresser and vanity with Renaissance Chalk Furniture Paint, in the color Ivory Tower. We replaced the drawer hardware with new ones from Hobby Lobby. We also reupholstered the vanity seat with a fun chevron pattern.
Last but not least for our DIY projects was painting all the frames we got at the Yard Sales. I love a gallery wall, and I couldn’t wait to make one above her bed. I spray painted the frames coral, navy and turquoise.
Finally, it was time to put the whole room together. It was bright and joyful, and the perfect amount of feminine flare. Cierra loved the transformation, and so do I! It is so satisfying to see all the hard work come together!
